Short Trip To RCHD

RCHD, in this case stands for Red Cross Home for the disabled.

Just want to share on what I feel about the trip recently. (5th march, Sat)

On my first time entering the place, while observing the people there, I didn't really feel that comfortable, since some of the conditions they have were kind of 'serious'.

Well, but after a while, got adjusted to the conditions there, and to be honest, it was a really nice experience - helping in the games, communicating with the folks and feeding them.

What we actually did there

(no pictures could be posted as to protect the integrity of the people there.)

We helped out in some mini games, which is a type of therapy session for them. During that session (mine was bowling and throwing the ball into a type of container), it was encouraging to see most of the folks over there being enthusiastic over the games, where a woman was really quick in completing the task. I bet she could be even faster than me if it is a competition. =.= Also from what I heard, it is the first time Red Cross members participate in that session (even though they have been there a lot of times before previously).

Next we come to the feeding part, where each one of us were asked to feed the disabled. In fact, I am actually quite blessed to be able to be given such an opportunity, to be able to do a part (even though it may not be much) in learning to care for the people there. Everything turns out right in the end though there were some 'resistance' in the beginning. :)

However, about the communication part, at times, I just do not know what to say to them, but it turns out that some of them are actually quite friendly. Perhaps I would be able to learn how to communicate with them better in future. (after observing some red cross members doing it). Definitely something to be improved on.

To summarize, this experience is indeed priceless to me, and I feel that it is a 2-way relationship, where we give by sacrificing part of our time with them, and in return, we got valuable experience, and also some insight to be taken home. :)

This trip reminded me yet again about how blessed I am to be able to live a life without disabilities, but sometimes as human, we do whine about our inadequacies in life, without realizing that there are actually a group of people out there, who couldn't even want to whine even if they want to. Perhaps something to think about, especially when we want to start whining about our current situations? :)

*****************************************************************

Just to end with a video recently shown on facebook about a girl who plays a piece by Richard Clayderman perfectly (at least to me) even though she got a hand without any fingers. I was just stunned when I saw her performance for the first time on facebook. Here's the video.

If she could do it, as in playing the piece despite disabilities and obstacles surrounding her, why couldn't I do the same (in other areas of my life)? That's a question which I ought to ask myself whenever I feel like whining. :)
